COME UNTO ME

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

1.       Jesus gives us a personal invitation to come.  To have us move or travel toward or into a place thought of as near or familiar to the Him.  To take or occupy a specified position in space, order, or priority:  He invites to come to Him.

2.      To release, hand over, give up and to not hold onto our weariness.  Are you tired, fed up, feeling, or showing tiredness, especially because of excessive exertion.  You have worn yourself out. exhausted and fatigued.  You can’t go another step.  Peter tells us in 1 Pet 5:7 to cast our cares o him.  Release them.  Let them go.  You are not designed to carry these, and you have been.

3.      You are burdened down.  It means to put or impose a burden on someone or yourself, a weight that oppresses.  It also means to make someone or us hold or carry something heavy or accept or deal with something difficult.  heavily laden or encumbered burdened with/by debt/guilt/responsibilities.  You are worried, overcome, not sure if you can make it.

4.      Jesus promises to give your rest.  Rest in the Bible has different meanings depending on the context. It can mean to relax in peace, to sleep peacefully, to refresh oneself, to worship God, or to trust in His sovereignty and love.  Rest is a repeated theme throughout Scripture. Rest is also a gift from the Holy Spirit for Christians in their daily lives.

a.       The Lord wants you to cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength:

b.      He wants to you to be revived, refreshed, renewed, and transformed.

29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

1.      Take his yoke.  That special apparatus designed specifically for you and your situation.  The word “yoke” is the Greek word zugos, referring to a wooden yoke that joined two animals together, so they could combine strength to pull a load that would have been too much for one animal to pull alone.  You have someone working and pulling you with.  In some situations, he is actually doing all the work.

2.      Learn of Him.  Jesus rested in the fact that he had divine assistance, help and power working with and through Him.  Jesus did the will of his Father through the power, authority, enablement and anointing of the Holy Spirit and we can do the same.  Watch his example.  He is our role model, mentor, and trainer.

3.      Jesus is gentle.  He will not be hard, harsh, or bossy. Gentleness is a strong hand with a soft touch. It is a tender, compassionate approach toward others’ weaknesses and limitations. A gentle person still speaks truth, sometimes even painful truth, but in doing so guards his tone so the truth can be well received.  Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit.    It is having or showing a mild, kind, or tender temperament or character.

4.      Jesus is humble.  That means he is seeking the will of the Father and not his own.  He yielding to the Lord.  It is having or showing a modest or low estimate of one's own importance.  You are meek but still have dignity and integrity of character.

5.      You will find rest for your souls.  Your will, intellect and emotions will find relaxation, peace, help and comfort.  You will have safety and refuge.

30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

1.      It means that what Jesus gives is easy not harsh, cumbersome, or difficult.  You will be able handle it easily.  You will be able to achieve it without great effort, presenting few difficulties.  You are working with the Lord.  You have divine assistance help and support.

2.      His burden is light. It means his teachings are no longer burdens but blessings as they move us toward the life God always intended for us.  Jesus is saying that we now have divine promises, blessings, and benefits.  The important point is that these are not just for us but for others.  We are to give, release and spread these to others.  Paul says that which I have received pass unto you.
