PROVERBS OF STEEL FOR MARCH 31, 2023

March 31 – In house Mechanisms – 1 Cor 6:2-3

 March 31 – In house Mechanisms – 1 Cor 6:2-3

2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

Paul introduces an incredible thought for the Corinthians and us.  He tells them that one day they will be judging the world and angels.  Paul told Timothy in 1 Tim 2:12 that we will one day rule and reign with Christ.  This is one the benefits and promises that came through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  This will happen in the millennial kingdom.  As powerful as angels are one day, we will judge them.  This is an incredible thought.  So, in turn Paul says if this our future cannot we set a church mechanism that can deal with trivial cases and matters pertaining to life.  This is one of the roles of church leadership of elders, deacons, church boards or steering committees.  Every church should have some sort of governing body to help steer the church in disputed among church members.  Paul is saying let’s keep matters in house.

Things to come

A good report

Proverbs of steel for march 30, 2023

March 30 – Court Disputes – 1 Cor 6:1

 March 30 – Court Disputes – 1 Cor 6:1

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?

Paul then addresses another problem that was happening in the church.  Those who were in dispute with each other were taking the matter to court.  Now it is true that the Greeks had one of the most progressive legal systems in the ancient world. Their judicial system believed in the right of the individual for a fair trial.  Paul asks a question, “why are you taking spiritual matters to a secular court?”  How would someone who is ungodly be able to understand or give a fair judgment when you are dealing with things of the Spirit.   Paul was remembering Jesus’ dispute mechanism which is speak to offending party first and if unresolved bring a impartial person to help verify what is being said.  If the dispute is still unresolve than bring it before the church and if still, it cannot be resolved than there has to be a parting of the ways.

Simply put Godly dispute mechanism is much more personal and communicative than going to court and finding yourself in an adversarial position.  Where the object is to win and get justice no matter what the cost.  In secular courts love, impartiality, and forgiveness is not to goal or object of the matter.

PROVERBS OF STEEL FOR MARCH 29, 2023

March 29 – Act quickly – 1 Cor 5:13

 March 29 – Act quickly – 1 Cor 5:13

13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

Paul closes off this chapter with two thoughts and answers to his questions.  First God will judge the outside.  He will deal with each person with truth, clarity, fairness, and equity.  God is the final judge because he knows all things.  He knows the thoughts and intents of the heart.  He sees all and knows all.  This also clearly shows that there is a day of judgment and reckoning.  No one escapes whatever is done will be shown for what it is.

Paul then states that the role of the church is to expel the wicked from among us.  Something many pastors and churches are unwilling to do.  This is part of the reason for division, strife, heresies, and liberal thinking we see happening in the church today.  Quick action will keep the church protected from negative, worldly, human, and demonic influences.  It is not popular, but this is a matter of life and death because of the long term and health and growth of the church.

Worthy of his calling

Proverbs of steel for march 28, 2023

March 28 – How to Judge – 1 Cor 5:12

 March 28 – How to Judge – 1 Cor 5:12

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?

You have probably noticed that Paul often asked questions and made a point through his questions.  He asks two questions .  What business is it to judge those outside the church?  Paul is aware the world is to large and to wicked for the us to judge them.  His second question answers the first.  Are we not to judge those in the church.  It has been expounded by the liberal that the church is not to judge based on what Jesus said in the gospels.  Paul however makes It clear that we have a responsibility to examine the attitudes, motives, words, and actions of those in the church.  A way of looking at it is that we are fruit inspectors.  By how people live they show us who has their heart.  Leadership is especially given this task because as has been pointed out earlier a little leaven can destroy the whole dough.  Judging is protection for the whole.  By judging we protect others from false teachers.  This is especially important for the new believers is or especially vulnerable to negative influence.

March 27 – Be wise – 1 Cor 5:11

 March 27 – Be wise – 1 Cor 5:11

11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister] but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

Paul clarifies this question.  He tells them that they must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister in the Lord.  When their show or exhibit the following behavior.  If they are sexually immoral and this was very common in Corinth because the temple of Aphrodite was there.  If they are greedy, an idolater, slanderer, drunkard, or swindler Paul tells them to not even eat with these people.  A recent study found that when you eat with people you connect with them on many different levels.  Paul was aware of that and so he tells them to not eat with these people.  Also, there was a more practical application because in those days much of the food eaten was dedicated to local deities and gods.  By eating with these people, you are approving and unknowingly supporting what they do and who they worship.

March 24 – Good leaven – 1 Cor 5:8

 March 24 – Good leaven – 1 Cor 5:8

8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth

Paul then continues and uses an analogy familiar to his Jewish audience.  The Passover is the most sacred festival in the Jewish calendar because it is the time that the Jews were released from the tyranny of the Egyptians.  The first born the land were slain by the angel of death but the Jewish families were spared because of the blood of the lamb put on the doorposts and lintels.

Paul calls his readers to celebrate the full benefits of this act of salvation where Jesus Christ allowed by body to be broken and his blood to be shed for our salvation.  He then asks them to throw off the shackles of malice and wickedness and put on sincerity and truth.  Allow our lives to be leavened by the new and not by the old.  Remember all things have passed away and all things are becoming new.  Forget the past and embrace the future in Christ.

March 23 – Little Leaven – 1 Cor 5:6-7

 March 23 – Little Leaven – 1 Cor 5:6-7

6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

Paul uses a familiar illustration to get his point across.  He reminds them that all it takes is a little yeast to leaven a whole batch of dough.  Bread has been a staple for centuries in all countries around the world.  The active ingredient to expand the bread is yeast.  Paul then tells them to get rid of the old yeast of the world, flesh, and the devil.  This kind of yeast creates a bad kind of bread not worthy of eating but to be thrown away.

The active ingredient in the Christian life is the Jesus Christ.  He is the Passover lamb.  Through his blood we have been given eternal and abundant life.  He through the Holy Spirit helps us to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.  The object of our lives must be to do the will of our Father.  If we allow the old yeast of the world to leaven our lives, we have made the sacrifice of Christ of no affect.  We need to grow into what we are and shall become.

A prophecy on John the Baptist

PROVERBS OF STEEL FOR MARCH 21, 2023

March 21 – Turn Them Over – 1 Cor 5:5

 March 21 – Turn Them Over – 1 Cor 5:5

5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Paul then brings another controversial idea for the modern church.  He says to deliver or let this person be delivered to stan for the destruction of the flesh.  In simple terms let him go and suffer the consequences of his action.  Like the prodigal he will have to face the full effect of what he has done.  Paul points out that God is not mocked whatever we sow we reap.

Paul is saying let this man go and when sin has had its way for him, he will return, and the Spirit will be glorified in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Church discipline has a purpose like all discipline and that is to correct behavior and set boundaries.  Paul saw in the Spirit the results of this action because in the second letter he writes to return this man to fellowship for he had learned his lesson.
