Isaiah 61:3New International Version (NIV)

and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
    instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
    instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.

Divorce

Divorce – Matt 5:31-32

This is a very important passage of scripture for it gives one of the two causes for divorce.  Jesus was teaching on the only clause for divorce.  Now in Jesus’ day if a man or woman wanted to divorce their spouse they would have to make a divorce announcement in writing and then give it to their spouse.  This would then constitute a divorce.  This of course became rampant in Jesus’ day.  So Jesus clarifies God position on this matter.
Jesus states here that the only cause for divorce was adultery.  This of course is the breaking of the marriage vows.  Paul states in the book of Corinthian another cause is being a Christian being married to a non Christian and the Non Christian wants a divorce.  Then the Christian can let them go so both can live in peace.
Jesus also said that if the cause of the divorce is not adultery than the two people involved when they get married again are committing adultery with their new partners.  Jesus also makes it clear that all other reasons for divorce besides adultery are because of the hardness of people’s heart.  So it is imperative that if you are married or considering marriage think very seriously about your vows and also keep your heart right.

Sunday School Teachers

One of the most valuable people we have in our church world is the Sunday School teacher.  Sunday School teachers are on the from line in the war of influencing the next generation.  Make sure they have all the supplies they need.  Support and pray for them.

Proverb of Steel

A praying parent will have more influence on the future than any politician, celebrity, scientist or social reformer.

Teaching about adultery

Teaching about adultery – Matt 27-30

Jesus teaches on a delicate but prevalent problem.  It has been said that over 50% of marriages couple will face an adulterous situation sometime in their married life.  Jesus nails the issues on the head.  Adultery is a result of looking, thinking and then acting out.  Jesus stated that even looking at another person with lust you have already committed adultery in your heart.
The process begins with a thought, then you think about it and it becomes a strong thought.  Then you created an imaginary scenario and then it becomes a stronghold which often leads to action.  The results often mean a marriage break up.
Jesus says cut the thought, the lust, or desire to possess that person off as soon as possible.  Refuse to give in to it.  The analogy is both brutal and effective.  It is better to be decisive then have this thing lead you into some form of hell.  The results of adultery are devastating.  Mistrust, hurt, un-forgiveness and so many other things.   It becomes a hell for the injured spouse, the offender and the children.  It is not worth the hassle it will create.

Praying Parent

It is the middle of the week and today I want to talk about the highest calling.  A praying parent will have more influence on the future than any politician, celebrity, scientist or social reformer.  Prayer is the highest calling because it is what Jesus is doing right now.  So pray for your kids both privately and with them.  This is is one of the greatest things you can teach your family.

Proverb of Steel

Fathers have incredible influence on the next generation.  How we love, discipline, raise and praise our children will determine if out our house comes a Billy Graham or a Karl Marx.

Settling Accounts.

 Matt 25-26.  Settling Accounts.

Jesus is proposing both spiritual truth, practical advice and common sense here.  First, the spiritual truth is to settle as quickly as possible accounts between you and others.  Speed is of the essence here.  Waiting or procrastination can result in terrible consequences.
The practical advice is simple.  If you find yourself in court because of some financial matter then meet with the person and see what you have to do to settle the matter.  Practical advice is to be friendly, co-operative and promise to commit to a practical repayment plan.  This will prevent you from losing the case and actually going to jail for the matter.
Common sense tells you that working out matters with others before it escalates to lawsuits, court cases and litigation is more a matter of pride or stupidity than anything else.  A friendly co-operative manner often disarms enemies and creates an atmosphere of co-operation and a desire to work things out.

Verse Today

Psalm 68:19New International Version (NIV)

19 Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
    who daily bears our burdens.

For Dad

This exhortation is directed to the Dads.  Fathers have incredible influence on the next generation.  How we love, discipline, raise and praise our children will determine if out our house comes a Billy Graham or a Karl Marx.  Dadds did you know that 85% of children's self esteem comes from you.  So how you treat them is important.  So take your time be intentional and do it under the direction of God.  This will enable you to be the dad that God intended to be.

Proverb of Steel

Church membership does not insure loyalty but love for Christ does.

Making things Right

Making things Right – Matt 5:24-24

Jesus now teaches on what we need to do about making things right with the Lord and with others.
He says when you are about to present an offering or gift to the Lord and while you are there and your remember that you or your brother has something against you before your offer that gift go make it right.
Often it is in during these times of worship the Lord reminds us of un-forgiveness or offences that need to be dealt with.  There is a story about an Indian chief who had wrong another man.  He had become a Christian and when he saw this man he immediately made it right with his enemy and the result was most of his tribe became to know Jesus.  Our example can lead others in the same path of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Revelation 12:11King James Version (KJV)

A reality Check

We just came through EAster and with it came many real blessings.  The one funny part of Easter is how many people will go to church.  They are CE Christians.  They come to church on Christmas and Easter.  So here is your thought.  Church membership does not insure loyalty but love for Christ does.  Let the love of Christ flow through your life and serve the Lord all year and you will be in church because you love Christ.

True Giving

True Giving – 2 Cor 9:6-11
Intro:  The Apostle Paul shares with the Corinthians and us five wonderful truths today.

I WILL GIVE YOU TWO APPLES

An atheist and a little boy in his neighborhood were talking one day about God, church and faith. Finally, the old neighbor said to the little boy, "Son, I don’t see how there could be a God in this world with all of the problems we have. I will give you an apple if you can prove to me that God exists!"

The little boy grinned and said, "Sir, I believe in God and I will give you TWO APPLES if you can prove that He doesn't exist!"

  1. There is a law of nature.  Whoever sows will reap.  The little the sow the little you sow.  The more you sow the more you reap.  Vs 6
  2. Each person should give as they have decided in your heart.  In the Old Testament the guideline is a tenth.  In the New Testament there is no guideline because love is your motivation.  Your time, talents and resources belong to him.
Vs 7
  1. Do not give under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver.  Vs 7

Some people are never happy. A Jewish lady's grandson is playing in the water, she is standing on the beach not wanting to get her feet wet, when all of a sudden, a huge wave appears from nowhere and crashes directly over the spot where the boy is wading.

The water recedes and the boy is no longer there. He simply vanished. She holds her hands to the sky, screams and cries, "Lord, how could you? Have I not been a wonderful mother and grandmother? Have I not given to Bnai Brith and Haddasah? Have I not tried my very best to live a life that you would be proud of?"

A few minutes later another huge wave appears out of nowhere and crashes on the beach. As the water recedes, the boy is standing there, smiling, splashing around as if nothing had ever happened. A loud voice booms from the sky, "Okay, okay, I have returned your grandson. Are you satisfied?"

She responds, "He had a hat.

Seven scriptural principles for giving.

I.          According to Income – Deut 16:17
I.                   Secretly – Matt 6:3
II.                Freely – Matt 10:8
III.             With Simplicity – Rom 12:8
IV.             Regularly every week – 1 Cor 16:2
V.                Cheerfully – 2 Cor 9:7
VI.             Generously – 2 Cor 9:10

Talk about Dareen Stahl

  1. God is able to make grace abound in all times, in all you need for every good work.  Vs 8-10

Talk about Joseph in Potiphar’s house and prison.

  1. When you give gifts to the poor the righteous of God endures forever.
  2. He will supply and increase your seed and enlarge your harvest of righteousness.

  1. You will be made rich in every way so you can be generous on every occasion.  What will happen is those around you will give thanksgiving to God because of your generosity.

I heard a missionary tell an amazing story of a child’s generosity. John Bechtel, a missionary in Hong Kong, wanted to start a Christian camp to reach people for Christ. A bankrupt multimillion-dollar hotel and conference center became available for sale. He made an offer to purchase the property and then traveled around the world to raise the millions he would need. But no one was willing to help and he returned to Hong Kong discouraged. Then one day he got a letter from a young girl that included $1 and a note saying she wanted him to use this to buy the camp. John Bechtel prayed and took the girl’s $1 to the real estate closing and the corporation decided to accept the $1 as full payment! Since the camp first opened, over a million people have come and over 100,000 have accepted Christ.

  1. God wants to have fruitfulness, liberality and spiritual riches.
  2. Blessing follows the cheerful, generous and graceful giver.

Proverb of Steel

There is one thing that will insure longevity in a marriage and that is friendship.

You are Salt.

Matt 5:13 –
You are Salt.

What Jesus teaches next is in the form of a metaphor.  He equates the Child of God as salt.  Salt in the ancient world was very valuable.  It had three qualities.  First, it was used as it is today as an element to flavour food.  Food tastes better when salt is added to it.  Life is better when salted with prayer, the word of God, fellowship and evangelism.  Our lives need also to be flavoured with the fruit and gifts of the Spirit.  These affect those around us and we have an impact.  Salt next was used as a preservative.  Before the invention of the ice box or the refrigerator food was preserved by putting salt on it.  In us, is the preservation, protection and proclamation of the gospel.  The last function in the ancient world was currency.  It was a trading commodity.  We are to trade and share the gospel with whom ever we come across.
Jesus then says if salt loses its flavour it is useless.  You cannot make it salty again.  This is a warning for apostasy and effective living.  Those who lose their ability to influence, preserve or proclaim the gospel become like salt, useless and the gift has been wasted.  This is a warning and an encouragement.

Don`t be in a hurry

Water and Blood

Ten commandments

Proverb of Steel

When you say you love your wife it is reality when she sees you follow through with action.

Blessed are the Persecuted.

Matt 5:11-12 –
Blessed are the Persecuted.

Jesus finished the thought of persecution by reminding His audience there are three consequences or realities that come with being His followers.  First, you will be insulted.  An insult is the verbal reaction to hatred or misunderstanding.  When someone does not understand, agree or hates what you stand for there is going to be a negative reaction.  David calls them mockers.  A mocking spirit comes from an unredeemed heart.  When a person does not know Christ they belong to the kingdom of darkness and their master is satan.  They do not understand you, whom you serve or what you stand for so they will insult, slander and malign you.  Secondly, you will be persecuted, people will become hostile, abusive and cruel to you.  They will harass you.  Friends become enemies, family become abusive and hostile.  All because we are His followers.  Thirdly, you will be lied about.  Satan is the father of all lies and so his followers will use the same method of attack.
Your reaction should be one of happiness and rejoicing.  When the disciples were beaten for the sake of the gospel, they rejoiced.  To be counted worthy to suffer for Christ has been a badge of courage from the beginning of the church.  Jesus says a reward is being held or kept in heaven for you.  Do not let a little persecution on earth keep you from your reward in heaven.
Jesus then closes this thought with reminding His audience that they persecuted the prophets who were before them.  Religious establishment resent change.  It upsets social, religious and often economic realities.  Often new ideas and ways of doing things are met with opposition because of ignorance and fear.  God is always doing a new thing because man loves stability, security and self importance.  These things in themselves are not bad but they are factors that lead to resistance to necessary change.   Today remember when God is making the necessary changes in your life don’t be surprised by those around you to resist it and remember your in good company when people react negatively.

Verse Today

Hebrews 4:12King James Version (KJV)

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Love your spouse

It is the middle of the week and here is a simple but powerful thought.  When you say you love your wife it is reality when she sees you follow through with action.  The Bible says we show our love for God and others by what you do.  Your wife is your life partner.  She choose you so now be worthy of that choice and love her in action. This way you show she made the right choice.

Blessed are the persecuted.

 Matt  5:10 -
Blessed are the persecuted.

Over the next two days we will examine the concept of persecution and what it means.  Jesus says here that you are blessed when you are persecuted because you are doing what God requires and for righteousness.  Righteousness and all that is associated with always come with a price.  When you become a Christian you have immediately changed kingdoms and leaders.  Before Christ your kingdom was darkness and the devil.  After Christ your Kingdom is heaven and leader is Christ.  Peter says, “Do not think it strange when fiery trials come because of your relationship with Christ.”
The exhortation here is to count the cost.  Eternal life has its cost and benefits.  A small amount of persecution now for an eternity of life and victory seems a small price to pay when you think of it in those terms.  Jesus says the Kingdom of heaven is theirs now and in the future.  We will complete this thought tomorrow.

Blessed are the Meek

Matt 5:5 – Blessed are the Meek

Blessed are the meek.  In other translations the word blessed is also translated as happy.  So happy or blessed are those that are meek.  Another word used here is gentle.  The word meek means, to be gentle, obedient and not to protest.  Jesus is saying when you submit to the will of God, choose to be obedient to His plans, purpose and direction for life.  The whole world is yours.
Meekness is not weakness it is actually a place of strength.  You are in the center of God’s will.  You have submitted your past, present and future into His hands.  Jesus is the perfect example of this.  He surrendered to the will of God and died on the cross, was buried and rose again.  This submission to the Father’s will secure our salvation.  Our submission, obedience to the will of God means we will inherit and receive what God has promised.
The Jerusalem Bible says we will have the earth as our inheritance.  The New Testament does teach that one day we will rule and reign with Christ.  Jesus says when we are gentle, obedient and not fighting God’s will our future is secure.

Proverb of Steel

The once was a man who said he was self controlled the problem was at the time of this statement he was eating his sixth donut.

Blessed are the Pure

 Blessed are the Pure

Jesus has been teaching on how a person can be happy and blessed.  Today, we learn that when you are pure in heart you shall see God.  Purity is not a natural attribute in man.  We are sinners by birth and inclination.  So how does one attain this purity?  It begins by asking for forgiveness of your sins and coming into a right relationship with God.  God changes your heart.  The heart is where thoughts, emotions and will reside.  It is that part of you that directs moral and social decisions.  Out of the heart comes the issues of life.  Who rules the heart rules the person.
When you sincerely desire to be right with God and you accept Him into your life through Jesus Christ, He imparts into your life purity.  You want to please God.  Your thought life changes, which translate into right speech patterns, proper attitudes and purity in actions.  Jesus says when you sincerely desire change and come to God to change you, it will happens and you will see God.   Purity. morality and righteousness are a choice.  You choose God and with that choice is the ability to know and see God in His fullness.

Verse Today

Hebrews 13:15King James Version (KJV)

15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Friday Thought

It is Friday and I thought I would share with you a little story on self control.  The once was a man who said he was self controlled the problem was at the time of this statement he was eating his sixth donut.  Self control is a fruit of the Spirit.  So today let the Holy Spirit control your life.  When that happens He will point out the areas that need improvement and help and then he will help you.

Blessed are the Merciful.

Blessed are the Merciful.

This statement is a lesson in cause and effect.  If you are merciful you shall receive mercy.  If you are good, then those around you will be good to you.  This is a statement of character and integrity.  Mercy is a quality of love.
Being merciful means that you have the right and power to punish someone for a wrong done but you choose instead to be merciful and pardon them.  A wonderful example is the story of the man who owed his superior a huge debt and when he asked for mercy it was granted to him.  The downside of this story for that man that when he was asked by another who owed him money he refuse to grant the same mercy he was shown.  In turn he ended up in debtor’s prison because of his lack of mercy.
Jesus teaches a spiritual and natural truth here.  What you sow is what you reap.  Today show mercy, love and compassion and when you need it you shall receive it in turn.

Proverb of Steel

The biggest problem with marrying for beauty or looks is that in many cases an ugly personality goes with it.

Blessed are the Hungry

 Blessed are the Hungry

This beatitude is so powerful.  Jesus says that those that are hungry and thirsty for righteousness shall be filled.  It seems today the opposite is true.  Today many are hungry and thirsty after the things of this world.  Righteousness is such a wonderful truth.  Righteous means to do what is morally right.  The only true standard for strong morality is the Bible.  It’s absolutes have been a standard of faith and practice since the first book which is Job was written.
Jesus says that those who hunger and thirst for moral purity will be filled.  They will be filled with the grace, love and mercy of God.  The outgrowth of this hunger and thirst is the infilling of the Holy Spirit.  He is the one who creates and fulfills this hunger and desire.  Right thinking, leads to right attitudes, right speech and actions.  The English Bible says that those who hunger and thirst to what is right will be filled.
Today ask that Lord to give you a hunger and thirst for righteousness.  You shall be filled and you will have the right thinking, right motives, attitudes and desires.

Verse Today

1 Thessalonians 5:18King James Version (KJV)

Marriage is wonderful

It is Wednesday and here is your thought for today.  The biggest problem with marrying for beauty or looks is that in many cases an ugly personality goes with it.  SO marry for love and look first of all at the personality and values of the person you are marrying.  The first quality to always look for is whether or not they love God.  Then go from there.

Sermon on the Mount

Sermon on the Mount – Matt – 5-1-3

Jesus saw that there were many people who had come to hear what He had to say.  So He went up on a mountainside.  When the time and setting were right.  His disciples came and sat beside Him and He began to teach.  His first lesson would on 8 blessings, which later would become known as the Beatitudes.   Blessed are those who are poor in Spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of God.
Jesus says when you know you have a need for God, when you have a contrite and humble attitude and when you are poor in spirit.  You will have the Kingdom of God with all its attributes.  The Kingdom of God as we learn has three qualities to it, righteousness, peace and joy.  Righteousness is created because we have right standing and relationship with God.  This of course leads to right living.  Peace is absence of warfare or strife in life.  Jesus promised to give us peace.  This peace is of course not as the world gives and the beauty of it is that the world cannot take it away.  The last attribute of the kingdom is joy, that deep contentment knowing that God has everything under control.  When you are humble, contrite and penitent before the Lord you will have the Kingdom of God fully working and developing in your life.

God loves you

It is Tuesday and here is your thought.  There are many Trends and fads today but there is one absolute, God loves you.  Nothing can change that.  You are His and He loves you.  So today walk in that reality and truth.  Also let His love flow through you to others.  They need to know this as well.

The Twelve Disciples Called – Mark 3:13-19 & Luke 6:12-16

Jesus went out into the hills and spent all night in prayer.  He was facing a tremendous decision.  He was choosing the men who were going to take His message to the world.  He saw in them much potential.  That is what I love about the Lord.  He does see as we are right now but what we shall become.  Jesus wanted to make the right choice.

1.       Jesus was a man of prayer and we must be the same.  If Jesus needed to pray how much more should we be praying.
2.       Jesus called men not according to ability but potential.  He saw in them faith and trust.
3.       He sent them out to preach.  They had authority over demons.  In His name we can overcome any foe or adversary.
4.       His twelve disciple were:  Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the Son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot.

Don't waste

It is the beginning of the new week and here is a thought.  One of the greatest wastes and tragedies in life is when someone has the capacity and ability to do something for others and they do not.  So as you start a brand new week use all your talents, resources and time for the glory of God.  Ask Him to show how you can be the best for Him and then do it for His glory.

Proverb for Today

Having the ability to do something is no guarantee you will but having the right heart attitude is.

Jesus heals all

Matt 12:15-21, Mark 3:7-12 and Luke 6:17-19

Jesus went back and healed many of various diseases.  He fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah.  Jesus then went to many different places through out Galilee.  People followed him so they could be touched by Him.  Demons were also cast out.  Jesus has power over sickness and demons.

1.       Jesus healed all who came to Him.  He was a man who always met the needs of those who needed it.  He will do the same for you.
2.       Jesus was a man of prophecy.  Isaiah said that He was a chosen servant of God.
3.       Jesus is the one who the Father delights in.
4.       The Father put His Spirit on Jesus and had called Him to proclaim justice to the nations.
5.       He will not quarrel or cry out, and no one will hear His voice in the streets.  He will not hurt anyone until He leads justice into victory.
6.       In the name of Jesus nations will put their hope in Him.  Prov 14:34, “States that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.”
7.       Jesus can heal with just a touch.  Demons fell down and recognized Him as God and they fled from Him.  They will do the same when we come in the name of the Lord.
8.       Power came out of Him to those who needed a touch.  Jesus was full of the power of the Holy Spirit.  Allow the Holy Spirit to use you today to touch your world for Christ.

Lamentations 3:55-57New International Version (NIV)

55 I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths of the pit.
56 You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears
    to my cry for relief.”
57 You came near when I called you,
and you said, “Do not fear.”
