Ps 15:5

Proverbs of Steel for Sept 25

Sept 26 – For the Benefit of All – 1 Cor 14:26

 Sept 26 – For the Benefit of All – 1 Cor 14:26

26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

Paul continues his instruction on how to best use the gifts of the Spirit and to bring order to services.  He calls them brothers and sisters and reminds them they have one unifying factor and that is Jesus Christ.  They are part of his family.  When they come together, and he assumes that they will.  One may have a hymn.  One my have a word of instruction.  Another may have a revelation.  One could have a tongue or the interpretation.  He has just outline five different expressions of the Holy Spirit.  The important thing here is that everything is done so that the whole church is built up.

The church and its corporate expression and makeup is one that one can have diversity and autonomy but when in a public session or service everything is done for the edification, exhortation, and comfort for all.  The church is not a private fiefdom where one person commands all.  It is a place where many contribute and express their relationship with God in a manner and form where all can grow and be built-up for the glory and honor of God.

Proverbs of Steel for Sept 25, 2023

Sept 25 – Five fold Purpose – 1 Cor 14:24-25

 Sept 25 – Five fold Purpose – 1 Cor 14:24-25

24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

Paul then says there are five things that happens when an unbeliever or an inquirer hears a prophecy.  They are convicted of there sins.  God is the revealer of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Secondly, they are brought in a time of reflection, interperceptual and judgement.  They know they cannot hide what is being revealed.  Thirdly, the secret of their heart is being laid bear.  Remember God knows our thought, motives, and attitudes.  He knows what is really gone on in the heart.  He also knows how to reach a heart.

Fourthly, they fall and worship.  God is showing His glory, power, and omniscience.  They know that God is in the house.  Lastly, they know beyond a shadow of doubt that God is among them.  Remember where two or three are gather in His name He is in the midst.  The oral gifts are tools God uses to reach both the unbeliever and the believer.

PROVERBS OF STEEKL FOR SEPT 15, 2021

Sept 15 – Gibberish – 1 Cor 14:9

 Sept 15 – Gibberish – 1 Cor 14:9

9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.

Paul relates three things for his audience and us to consider.  First, Paul directs his thought personal to the Corinthians.  When you speak intelligent words with your tongue.  Your language must be clear and concise.  Your presentation must have knowledge and information that is helpful.  Secondly, you must present and says it in a way that your hearers know what you are saying.  Grammar and form are important.  If you do not information and knowledge in your oral presentation you are just speaking to the air.  It has no meaning or relevance to the hearer.  You are speaking gibberish and baby talk.

Sept 14 – Illustrations – 1 Cor 14:7-8

 Sept 14 – Illustrations – 1 Cor 14:7-8

7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?

Paul uses the illustration of the pipe or the harp which were well known and well used instruments in the ancient world.  He says that they are useless unless they have the distinction of notes.  In the ancient world as like today songs have lyrics, chords and notes which make they have clarity, beauty and are understandable.   A trumpet unless it has a clear, sharp and distinct sound how will know what to do especially when you are getting ready for battle.  The armies of the ancient world had the trumpet as its main instrument to sound forth the commands of battle, advance or retreat.  These analogies are clear, concise, and precise examples that the church and audience in Corinth can understand as we can as well.  Paul last thought is that we are in a battle in the spiritual realm.

Proverbs of steel for Sept 13, 2023

Sept 13 – Fourfold Purpose – 1 Cor 13:6

 Sept 13 – Fourfold Purpose – 1 Cor 13:6

6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

Paul then says that the gift of Prophecy and tongues has a fourfold purpose directed by the Holy Spirit.  It is to bring you’re a revelation which is information and knowledge from the Spiritual realm that has never been known before.  This is God breathed knowledge and information.  Knowledge which is supernatural in nature and insight.  It is a glimpse into the spiritual realm with the intent of edifying, exhorting and comforting the hearer.  Prophecy is of course the oral presentation of Godly insight and discernment given in that moment of time.  A word of instruction is just as has been described.  It is a compass, instructional manual, and information guide from the supernatural to the natural with the intent of giving the hearer God’s perspective on the situation ay hand.  This is often scriptural in origin and always agrees with the scriptures.

PROVERBS OF STEEL FOR SEPT 12, 2023

Sept 12 – Important Information – 1 Cor 14:5

 Sept 12 – Important Information – 1 Cor 14:5

5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Paul then puts the gifts in their order of importance.  Paul would like for all the audience to speak in tongues.  It was the gift given in the three Pentecost type experiences mention in the book of Acts.  It is the initial evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  Paul wants all the audience to have access and practice the gift.  He then states that he would rather have them prophesy because the one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues.  The exception of course is that someone interprets so that the whole church can be edified and built up.  This is where he introduces the gift of interpretation which is the ability to bring forth and interpret a tongue in the public setting.  So, there is the private tongue design to edify the individual and the public tongue which needs an interpreter so that the whole church and audience may be encouraged, edified, and built up.  Remember tongues and prophecy are revealing the mysteries of the Spirit.

True Glory – 1 Cor 11:7-8

  True Glory – 1 Cor 11:7-8

7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;

In modern society Paul has been classified by feminists as out of touch with modern views.  I remember having this discussion many times over the years.  Paul is laying out the order of creation.  Man was created in the image of God, the social, moral, and spiritual image.  Our lives are design to honor and glorify God.  Paul then says that a woman is the glory of man.  Paul is explaining the Jewish view of men and women.  In Greek mythology Pandora was the first human woman created by Hephaestus on the instructions of Zeus.  Here role was to stay home and rear children.  Paul states that Eve was the first woman created out of Adam’s rib.  Not from his head to be above him or his feet to be below him.  From his side to be a compliment, helper, and work with him.  Paul was rebutting the Greek view of women especially what was being practiced and promoted in the homes and on the streets of Corinth.

PROVERBS OF STEEL FOR SEPT 8, 2023

Love Never Fails – 1 Cor 13:8

  Love Never Fails – 1 Cor 13:8

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Love will never fail.  It has no expiry dare.  Love keeps believing, trusting and going when all hope has gone.  Paul then says that the things prized in both Corinth and in the world will fail and pass away in time.  Prophecies will cease.  That day is not today but one day they will because God himself will fulfill all things.  Tongues will one day cease because we will all speak the same language which is the language of heaven.  The knowledge we learn everyday will pass away because one day we will be with Him and be like Him.  This verse has been used by certain groups in evangelical Christianity to say that tongues and prophecy ended with the apostles but if that were the case so did knowledge which obviously it has not.  Paul is saying at the end of the day all things cherished by mankind and even the church will fail and pass away but the one constant and consistent things of love because it is the essence, nature and character of God.  Love is who God is.
