7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

 

     Paul is about to talk about the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit.  He expresses the fact that they are manifestations in the physical world of the nature, character, and essence of the Holy Spirit.  These are communicated gifts of the Holy Spirit given in a moment of time for the common good of the church.  They are not for the benefit exclusively of the believer but are given for the benefit of all in the body of Christ.  These gifts are not given to be exploited, manipulated, or used for personal gain.  They are given under the control, leadership and authority of the Holy Spirit for the good of all in the church.
