May 3 – Devotion on Ephesians
Eph 5:25: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
In Vs 25, Paul says that men are to love their wives. The word for love here has four meanings. Men are to be their spouse’s friends, family, lovers, and spiritual heads. Men are to be the high priest in their homes and lead their families in the things of God. Men are to love their spouses unconditionally with no strings attached. Men have a responsibility to be willing to give all and do all for their families. This is something wanted to get across to his audience. In Ephesus, this was a foreign concept. The men of the city were often down at the local temples fulfilling their husbandly duties with others who were not their spouses and in this way they were worshipping the immoral gods of the city. Paul was presenting a new and holy lifestyle change.
