July 23 - Vignettes on Prayer

July 23 - Vignettes on Prayer

The topic of intercession is my favorite in prayer.  So later I will dedicate a whole series of vignettes to it.  Scriptures tells us that there are five groups of people we are to pray for.  Three we will talk about in this vignette and then the other two in the next one.  First, rulers and government officials.  In Canada I pray for our national, provincial and municipal.  I pray that God will help them to walk in wisdom, integrity, honesty, truth, accountability and transparency.  This so we can live a quiet and peace life in godliness and truth.  Next, we pray for our enemies, Jesus told us to do this in Matt 5:44.  This help us to walk in forgiveness.  Thirdly, for our fellow Christians.  Paul exhorts us to do this in Eph 6:18, we all face different things and we need to pray for each other.   Just doing these three will keep is busy and our hearts soft.

In this snap shot on prayer we are talking about the most important role in prayer which is intercession.  Intercession is speaking to God on behalf of others.  This is highest and most powerful form of prayer.  It is not about you it is about others.  When you are praying for others you are battling for them on behalf of them.  You are telling all the forces lined against those you are praying for that you are not letting them gain the victory.   You are fighting for souls.  Abraham fought for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah even though they did not deserve it.  Samuel fought for Saul’s soul.  I cannot emphasize this responsibility.  Pat Boone said, “If we do not pray God will hold us accountable.”  Most people who you pray for may never pray for themselves.  You are like Eliazer when he stood between the living and the dead when the judgment of God  was falling upon the Israelites.  If you do not pray they may perish.

We have been talking about confession a form of prayer.  An analogy on this aspect of prayer is this.  In marriage when we offend our spouse by an unkind word or action what it needed is to restore communication and fellowship is not another marriage but simply reconciliation by means of asking for forgiveness and being reconciled.  So when we sin we need to confess our failure to God and receive His forgiveness for a particular sin and communication and fellowship with Him will be restored.  One thing to note we do not have to confess all our past sin those were looked after when we came to Christ.  Just the one that has disturbed and broken our fellowship with God.   This is such an exciting concept.  One moment we are in a broken relationship and the next moment it has been restored.  The secret is receiving and keeping His forgiveness.
