THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

The Just Shall by Live Faith – Hab 2:4 – Sept 6, 2009

Intro:  Today I am echoing the words that have been proclaim through out Christian history.  Paul wrote about this phrase in Rom 1:17 and in his darkest hour of faith, this phrase became the cornerstone of Martin Luther’s life and work.

Background

1.  Habakkuk lived during the latter days of Judah.  He was a contemporary of Ezekial,

Nahum and Jeremiah.  He saw how the nation had gone from revival to ruin in one

Generation.  This is what has happen to Canada, when prayer, the bible and worship of

God was taken from the public realm our nation became corrupt.  Our sins are as

    Follows

Murder of innocent children, redefining the family unit, rampant divorce, injustice,

Moral indifference, idolatry, removing God from moral fabric of society, rampant

Dishonesty, destruction of family and social ills.

a.  Habakkuk saw the wickedness of the land and he was alarmed.  He was concerned

How quickly people can go from serving God to lukewarm ness and even turn away

From God.  That is why the writer of Hebrews writes, “Don’t neglect such a great

Salvation.”  Here are the signs to show you that you are going cold.

1.  Not reading your bible everyday.

2.  Not praying everyday.

3.  Not going to church whenever the opportunity comes.

4.  When God has not crossed your mind sometime during the day.

5.  Not sharing Jesus when the opportunity presents itself.

6.  Who do you associate with?

7.  Shallowness in your relationships with God and others.

8.  Emptiness of life.

9.  Love for the world.

b.  Habakkuk looks at his world and sees that there is a failure to repent, so many things

And God does not seem to intervene.  Evil enterprises, dishonesty, covetousness,

Loose living, idolatry, crime &  bloodshed.  As a man of prayer and an intercessor this

    vexed his righteous soul.

2.  God answers by saying the Babylonians were His instruments of vengeance.  But this

Creates a second problem, Habakkuk as a sincere discerner of truth wants to know

How can God who is pure let a nation such as Babylon attack Judah?  You ever asked

The question, “God can you use them or let this happen?  There are things and

Situations that are mind boggling and baffling.

a.  God’s answer is our text, “The just shall live by faith.”  The child of God doesn’t

Need to know everything but the righteous shall be preserved as they trust in Him.

b.  Habakkuk found out that any sincere questioner will receive an answer.  You may not

always like the answer or understand it but God can be trusted and circumstances are

     subordinate to faith.

b.  In verse one of Chapter two, Habakkuk sees himself as a watchman on the walls.  He

Says, I will wait and see what answer God gives me.

3.  God answer comes in these simple instructions.

a.  Write down what you hear and see  vs 2.

b.  Make it plain.  Vs 2

c.  Be ready to run and share it with others  vs 2.

d.  Know that God’s answer has an appointed time.  Vs 3

e.  It has an end point  vs 3.

f.  This answer will not prove false.  Vs 3

g.  It may take time but wait for it.  Vs 3

h.  It will come and it will not be delayed.  Vs 3

j.  The wicked are puffed up and not upright.  Vs 4

k. The righteous or just will live by faith.  Vs 4

4.  Habakkuk learns that God rises above all human doubt.  When all is gone, God is

There.  Faith is the key.  It is the substance of things hope for and the evidence of

Things not seen.  Heb 11:1, you have to believe God is exists and He the

Rewarder of those that diligently seek him.  When faith is knocked off its feet

It develops wing.  He also learn that when a vision or answer comes we must wait

     Until it comes.

a.  Habakkuk learns that Babylon will be God’s instrument but they will also be

Destroyed.  Retribution and vengeance belongs to God.  Habakkuk learns that the

righteous win so he is glad to find out these things.  A confidence in God is shown and

God is Glorified.  God is ruling and the purposes of God will come.  God’s character,

Goodness, love for His people, view of justice and righteousness are shown here.

c.  This lead to Habakkuk, a poet, musician and singer to close with a Psalm and prayer

     Of thanks.
