PICNIC IN GALILEE

Picnic in Galilee – Matt 15:29-39 – Jan 27, 2013

Intro:  This is a very interesting story because it a sequel to the feeding of the 5000.  In Most cases a sequel is not as good as the original but in this case it was just as good.

  1. This event took place after Jesus left the area of the Decapolis which is known as the land of the ten cities and He had returned to the Sea of Galilee. This event happened not long after Jesus had healed the deaf man.

  1. The background to this miracle is great crowds were following Him.  This was in the year of Jesus’ popularity.  He could do no wrong at this point.
  2. Great crowds came and brought Him the lame, dumb, blind, the crippled and many other types of diseases and He healed them all.
  3. Jesus is our healer, no disease, sickness, infirmity, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical need cannot be healed.

2.  In vs 31, the reaction of the people was they were amazed.  This is a phrase often quoted about Jesus.  People who see God move have three reactions.  Some know what happened, some think they know what happened and others have no clue to what happened.  Which would you rather be?

  1. This group was amazed and then they had a second reaction.  They praised the God of Israel.  They knew who was the source of the healing.
  2. The dumb spoke, the blind saw, the crippled were made well and the lame walked.  The evidence was there.  If you doubt God’s ability in some area He will supply evidence.  The Lord says, “test me and see if I will not open the windows of heaven.”

As in the feeding of the five thousand Jesus calls His disciples to Him.  He lists the reasons for what He is about to do.

  1. He had compassion.  Jesus is concerned about your needs, clothing, shelter, food and transportation.  Paul says in Phil 4:19, that God will supply all our needs.  Compassion moves the heart of God.
  2. Jesus said, “They have been with me three days.”  They were hungry for God Jesus says if you are hungry or thirsty, you shall be filled.
  3. Jesus then states, “I cannot send them home hungry they may collapse on the way.”  Jesus knew that they had spent three days being filled with spiritual food now He was going to supply the physical.  How would you love to be taught by Jesus for three days?  That must have been a glorious experience.  Today you can be taught by the Holy Spirit, through the word and when you apply it,  You never stop learning, growing and changing.  2 Pet 3:18

 4.       Just a note here.  Did you see the reaction of the disciples.  They reacted the same

way as they did in the feeding of 5000.  “Where are we going to get bread in this

remote place?” they replied.  .  In Heb 13:8, it at states Jesus Christ is the same

yesterday, today and forever.  What He did before, He will do again.

  1. Jesus then asked them just like before what do you have available?  They said 7 loaves and a few small fish.  Jesus can use our meager resources, our time or talents and multiply them to touch many.  He is Jehovah Jireh.

  1. He has them sit down, He took those resources and gave thanks and then gave it to His disciples and then in turn they gave it to the people.  Little lesson here.  We need to get from Jesus so we can give to others.  You can’t help people if you don’t have anything to give.  Paul says in 1 Cor 11:23, “That which I receive I pass unto you.”  You get this by the word, prayer, listening to anointed teaching, by looking and studying the life of others.

a.      The people ate and were satisfied.  When you come to Jesus and eat what He gives you will be satisfied.  Go to Jesus and you will be filled and satisfied.

b.     Then they collected what was left over and there was seven baskets left over.  When Jesus meets a need there is an abundance.  I have come to give you life and give it abundantly.  He is the God of the extra.

There were four thousand men in the crowd not including women and children.  God’s miracles and resources are for the whole family.  His provision is inter-generational.  He will meet your needs, your kids, God is not finished with your family.  He has heard your prayers.  Acts 16:31, Prov 22:6.  They are your promises.  This is not the end of your story or theirs.

c.      After Jesus was done He got into the boat and went to His next assignment.  He will supply today your miracle, need healing, victory.
