THE LORD HEALS

17:14 – Jan 25th – 2009

Intro:   First of two messages on Jeremiah, today and next week.  When I get back will finish our study on life of Jeremiah with message on Lamentations also written by Jeremiah.

Background of Book

-  Jeremiah was a priest from Anathoth.  His father was Hilkiah.  He started his ministry in the 13th year of the reign of Josiah and ministered until he Jeremiah died in Egypt several years after captivity.  He ministered for over 40 years.

-  Jeremiah spoke to a nation who first experienced revival but then quickly went apostate and backslidden.  That has happen to Canada.

-  Jeremiah was the first prophet to wage open conflict with his nation.  He believed that judgment without mercy would come to those who became apostate and defied God.  His outlook and message made him very unpopular and he suffered for it.

-  A man of contrasts.  Could be scathing in his attacks on the hypocrite and backslider yet this book possesses great promises and exhortation of love.

Jeremiah 17:14 – Heal with O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.

-  The Lord promises to heal those that need healing.  Whether physical, spiritual emotional, intellectual or family.  This is Jeremiah’s declaration of faith and ours.

-  Jeremiah knows God will save those who need to be saved.  Peter made that declaration on Acts 2:21.  Again a declaration of faith.

-  This causes a person to praise.  Jeremiah stated that.  Praise is thanking the Lord for what He has done.  Worship is thanking him for who He is.

Other lessons from Jeremiah.

1.  God is the moral governor of the world.  Through His people he shows moral

Purpose.  When we harden our hearts we go in moral chaos.  Jeremiah made it

Clear to Israel the consequences of sin and apostasy.

2.  Sacrifices, rituals and tradition are no substitute for repentance and righteousness.

Many individuals and church movements go this way.

3.  Jeremiah talks about a new covenant with the Messiah ruling in people’s hearts.

They will be renewed and they will have moral purity and it starts at the cross.

4.  The destiny of every man is determined by his conformity or lack of conformity

     To God and His plan.
