JOHN'S THOUGHTS

July 20th 2008 – Final remarks of John – 1 John 5:20-21

Intro:  I am so excited to final be finished this series.  It has been a year in a half in the making but timely in the fall I will be taking from the books of Esther, Job, Psalms and Proverbs.

We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true, And we are in Him who is true, even His Son Jesus Christ.  He is that true God and eternal life.

1.  John is finishing his final remarks.  The first statement he makes in Vs 20, is, “We

The Son of God has come.  John is saying that Jesus was the Son of God and He has

Come.  The promised Messiah of Israel had come.  John was His witnesses.  He was

There when Peter said, “You are the Son of God.”  To John, Jesus was the incarnation

The enfleshment of divine and the human.  God with a face.  100% and 100% man.

a.  His books give us the clearest and most intimate view of who Jesus is.  John was

Making this statement to refute the false teachers and Gnostics who distorted the true

View and teaching of Jesus Christ.  Satan’s most effective tool to draw people away is

To distort the person of Jesus Christ.

b.  John states here that he has seen the Son of God, talked with Him and saw Him die,

Buried and then rise again from the dead.

2.  John then says, “and He has given us understanding.”  When a person comes to

Knows Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour.  The Holy Spirit comes and

Lives inside.  John tells in John 16:14, that the Holy Spirit will glorify Christ and take

What is Christ’s and show or tell it to us.

a.  Jesus then restates it again in Vs 15.  The Holy Spirit will also lead us into all truth.

James says that if we need wisdom we can ask of God and He will give to us liberally.

We do need His wisdom in this process of growth.

b.  Peter remind in 1 Pet 3:18, that we are to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord

Jesus Christ.  All praise and glory belong to Him.

3.  Next John says that we know Him who is true.  Jesus states in John 14:6 that He was

The way the truth and the life and that no one could come to the Father but by Him.

Jesus was God’s idea.  Jesus is the truth.  As John said in John 1:14, a person full of

     Grace and truth.

a.  John wants us to know Him as not just as Saviour and Lord but also as a friend.  The

Scripture says that the Lord can be closer than a brother.  I love Matt 28:20 says that

The Lord will be with us even to the end of the age.

b.  This is a union and abiding that comes in our relationship with God.  John was a

Strong advocate of the purity of Christ and His unfathomable love.  This happens

Because of our connection with Christ.  John believed that character showed nearness

To Christ and a fuller revelation of Him.

c.  This union also brought an absolute trust in Christ for eternal life and abundant life for

     Now.

4.  John then states and we are in Him that is true.  In Him means to be one looking the

same.  You mirror or reflect Jesus.  The Strength of this relationship is you begin to

     Look like your master.

a.  You may have a different personality or approach but you replicate and imitate your

Master.  You thoughts, attitudes, actions and words reflect and honour Him.

b. To John, Jesus was the greatest example of fellowship and self sacrificing love.  He

Taught that the greatest expression of Christian character was to love one another.

It showed that we were his disciples.

c.  The word in Him or in Christ is a theme of the Book of Ephesians.  It is found 10

     Times in this book.

5.  The last Statement of Vs 20, John says that Jesus is the True God and Eternal Life.

This was John’s belief.  He was along with all the other apostles willing to die for

What they believed.  John saw Him in his glory on the Mount of Transfiguration.

This was a direct statement to the Gnostics and any others who distort or deny the

      Deity or humanity of Christ.

a.  Jesus us eternal life.  He is the only way to eternal life.  Men may say there are many

Ways to God but Jesus is God’s way.  Man’s believes that we can some how earn our

Way to heaven through monetary, good or monumental works.  God says, you come

     Through grace and faith.

b.  John makes a doctrinal or foundational statement of faith.  This is John’s exclamation

Point.  The Grand affirmation of Christ’s duty.  Jesus came for one reason and one

Reason only to save mankind from their sin.  All other things He did reflected this

Purpose.  John presented Jesus as the Lamb of God that took away the sins of the

world in Jn 1:29.  John 3:16 is a reflection of John’s belief that Jesus is God and

     Eternal life.

c.  Jesus is the true God, the perfect union of God and man.  100& God and 10% man.

God with a face.  I know I am sounding like a broken record but John believed it

And it coloured everything he wrote.  John as a mystic believed that you knew Christ

Through your heart and not your mind.

Dear Children, keep yourself from idols.

1.  John lived in a world dominated by idols.  Now today our idols may not be made of

Stone or wood but they are just as powerful.  Today people go after the idols of

Materialism, greed, lust money, knowledge, education, popularity, fame, fortune,

And glory to name a few.

2.  When sought with all our hearts and minds they are idols.  Jobs, position in

Companies, seeking bigger ad better things all put idols in our hearts and minds.

3.  In John’s day the whole society was ruled by idols and the moral laxness that went

With it.  His final remark is reminding us the priorities we need to show in our lives

Especially if we have children or Grand children.   As we close today.  Let us reflect

on what John has been saying and pray that we every day would reflect more and

     more of Jesus.
