LIFE OF JOSHUA

 

Joshua – General for the Lord!

                                            

His Early Life

 

- He was the son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim.  Num 1:8-16

- He led the forces of Israel against the Amalekites.  Ex 17:9

- He was the aide of Moses, accompanied him part way up Mt Sinai when the Ten

    Commandment were given and helped him at the tent of meeting.  Ex 24:12-13, 33:11

- Tried to get Moses to stop others from prophesying and was rebuked by Moses.  Num 11:28

- He was one of the spies sent to spy out the land of Canaan.  Num 13:8, 16

- With Caleb gave an encouraging report, did not side with other 10 spies and was able to enter

   Land of Canaan.  Num 14:6-30

 

Leader of Israel

 

- He was divinely appointed and ordained as successor to Moses.  Num 27:18-23

- Was given task to divide the land.  Num 34:17

- All Israel was to encourage Joshua and stand behind him.  Deut 1:38

- Joshua was to destroy all enemies of Israel.  Deut 3:21

- Moses gave him a solemn charge and outline of duties before Israel.  Deut 31:1-8

- He was given wisdom and Israel was to followed him like they did Moses.  Deut 34:9

- After Moses’ death, he was divinely installed as leader, encouraged in his task and instructed on

   The conditions for success.  Josh 1:1-9

- He immediately started on his career of conquest.  Josh 1:10-11

- The Canaan campaign opens with three supernatural events that indicate the Lord is with him. 

a. The river Jordan which is at flood stage divides and the Israel passes through.  Josh 3:14-17

b. The angel of the Lord tells Joshua outside of Jericho him how to defeat the city. 

     Josh 5:13-15, 6:2-5

c. The plan is followed, the people shout, the walls fall and there is complete victory. 

     Josh 6:12-21   

 

-  Joshua meets with one reversal, the defeat of Ai, teaching the necessity of absolute obedience

    To God.  Josh 7

-  Josh renews covenant Mount Ebal.  Josh 8:30-35
