May 8 – Clean me – Psalm 51:7
We are continuing our journey through Psalm 51, with David asking the Lord to cleanse him. The instrument revealed is Hyssop. Hyssop is a small bush which has two applications in Jewish lifestyle. First, it is a bush used for aroma therapy. When its leaves are crushed they exhibit a sweet aroma. Next, it is used in Jewish rites of purification. David says cleanse me with hyssop. I do not want anything to make me unclean in your sight God stated David
David then states that when God cleanses us we shall be whiter than snow. Snow is rare in Israel so when it happens it has a profound effect. Isaiah used this illustration in his book. In the mindset of the ancient person this was the best metaphor for cleansing from sin. A son remembered his father often in prayer using this phrase and how his father`s life was a consistent example of godly living. Ask God to cleanse you from your sin today if need be and keep short accounts with God.
