WHAT IS A FATHER

Father’s Day – Ephesians 6:4 – Fear and Admonition of the Lord.

Intro:  Paul writes two things that we men are capable of.  Causing of children to become exasperated and training them in the fear and admonition of the Lord.  It has been said, that 85% of a child’s self esteem come from the Father.  Maybe that is why so many children suffer fro self esteem problems.  It has been reported that the average Father will spend less than 5 minutes a day with his children.  You cannot do much influence in that period of time.

1.  Today since it is Father’s Day, we will look at the institution that is the bedrock,

Foundation or cornerstone of society.  The Family.

a.  We call our relatives “Family.”

1.  We are bond to them by a unique bond.  There is no one like family.  You can live

Without with out them and sometimes you cannot live with them.

2.  We are part of a special group. My family is made up of none very special people.

Six males and threw females.  All thankfully serving the Lord.  I pray for them

Everyday and fight on their behalf in prayer.

b.  The Family is made up of many members.

1.  Though there are many individuals, it is one family.  Could you describe your family?

In one phrase.  Lois, (Glue), Rob, Creative Actor, Rachel, (steady artist), Rebekah,

(Compassionate missionary), Ryan, (creative leader), Gideon (future man of valour),

     Jeremiah,  (Strong statesman).

2.  Each member has their place and responsibility.  When each one function in these

Roles and responsibilities.  The family succeeds.

c.  Most family problems are caused by selfishness.

1.  When one member of the family tries to exert their will over the others.

2.  Anthropologists call this establishing a pecking order.

3.  Psychologists call this “A power struggle.”

d.  Four things are necessary for harmony in the family.

There must be willingness to compromise.

There must be a spirit of forgiveness.

There must be a sense of reality.

They must be a sense of humour.

e.  What should every father want for Father’s Day.

1. a loving and unified home.

2.  A home filled with peace and contentment.

What is perfect love?

1.  Slow to suspect and quick to trust.              2.  Slow to condemn and quick to justify.

3.  Slow to offend and quick to defend.  4.  Slow to expose and quick to shield.

5.  Slow to reprimand and quick to forbear.  5.  Slow to belittle & quick to appreciate.

7.  Slow to demand & quick to give.  8.  Slow to provoke & quick to conciliate.

9.  Slow to hinder & quick to help.  10.  Slow to resent & quick to forgive.

Dad it is your responsibility to teach these things to your children.

Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.

The second part of this message is for the church.

The church is a family.

a. We call our spiritual relatives the church.  We all one thing in common we are came

To God through Jesus Christ.  We all have been forgiven, justified and made holy

Through the blood of Jesus Christ.

b.  The church is made up of many members.  1 Cor 12:12-31

c.  Most church problems are caused by selfishness.  1 Cor 3:3

d.  Four things are necessary for harmony in the church.

1.  There must be willingness to compromise.  Phil 2:4

2.  There must be a spirit of forgiveness.  Col 3:12-13

3.  There must be a sense of reality.  Rom 12:3-5 Phil 2:3

4.  There sense of humour.  Dan Betzer wrote, “Take the things of God seriously but

     Not yourself.”

e.  Unresolved differences grieve the Holy Spirit.

Dad I have four things I want to leave with you as a challenge today.

1.  Be a father that leads his children to salvation in Christ  This the duty of every

     Father..

2.  Impart to your children of understanding of life.  That life is to glorify God.

3.  Give your children moral guidance.

4.  Love your wife and children to the fullest.
