Vs 6 – The two witnesses have the power to do three things.  First, they have the power to shut up heaven.  That means for three years there will be no rain falling on the earth.  This will be during the time they are prophesying.  This also indicates that one of these persons is most likely Elijah based on he did a similar thing in ancient Israel during the reign of Ahab and Jezebel.  Now of course of one strong indicators that one of the two witnesses is Moses is the power to turn water into blood.  Moses did this during the time of Pharaoh.  Thirdly, this last one is terrifying.  They have the power to smite the earth with all kinds of plagues as often as they wish.  They will be instruments of judgment.  They will speak of repentance and love.  Yet they will also exact judgment on cities, nations and anyone who stands in their way.  They will be a combination of righteousness and power.  Their message will remind people that God is behind everything that is going on.  No matter how hard the world will try to ignore them and refuse their message they reality of what is happening on the earth will be clear, concise and precise.  No one will be able to claim climate change, natural occurrences or some other weird thing.  These witnesses will remind them that God and God alone is judgment the earth and its inhabitants.

Vs 5- Now these men have the power to bring fire and judgment upon any one who attacks them.  Now the text says that it comes out of their mouth.  This could be literal or symbolically.  The ability to do miracles and bring judgment upon the agents of the satanic trio is a great threat to the world system at this time.  These two individuals will cause no end of consternation to the forces of hell.  The ability to defend and destroy all who attack with fire shows the importance of this time of judgment.  It also illustrates the deadliness of this conflict.  It is life and death.  Light and darkness.  Truth verses a lie.  God verse satan.  This is the conflict of the ages with only one winner.  God and God alone.  They who attack will not be spared.  There will be no compassion, mercy and grace for the unrighteous.  As Elijah brought judgment on the soldiers of Israel who were sent to arrest him so these witnesses will be truth, righteousness and judgment on the forces of hell in whatever form they come.

Vs 3-4 – The Lord then tells John that there will be two witnesses that are coming.  The will have the power of God upon them.  They will be like two Old Testament prophets.  They will be able to do signs wonders and miracles.  They will speak the word of God and prophesy for 1260 days.  Their attire will be sack cloth.  They will be like two powerful men of God that will share God’s message of redemption and judgment.  They will be as Zachariah talks about in Zach 4:2-14. 

     They are the two live trees and the two candlesticks standing before the god of this earth. They will be fruitful like the olive tree.  They will bring the oil of joy and the fruitfulness of God on the earth.  What they share will be healing and light to those that are perishing and who listen to them.  They will be light in the dark world.  They will be representatives of God before satan, the anti-christ and the false prophet.  They will remind people that there is a God and the reason why all that is happening around them is because of sin and judgment.  They will not be ignored and they cannot be harmed.  They will be a major obstacle to total domination of the satan, the beast and the false prophet in the world.  They are messengers of light and life to a world dying under the darkness of evil.  Yet they will not be loved.  You see the world loves darkness rather than light.  They will be hated, despised and hunted but they cannot be harmed for 1260 days. 

     Now the question to the identities of these two witnesses is an endless debate.  Many believe it is Moses and Elijah.  Moses representing the law and Elijah the prophets.  One problem with this thought is that Moses did die up on Mount Nebo and Michael and satan fought over the body.  Most scholars believe it is Elijah and Enoch because they are the only two men who have not died.  The writer also agrees with this interpretation.  The one thing we do know is that these two witnesses will be a threat to the satanic world forces during their time period.

Vs 1-2 – John was given a measuring rod.  It was made of wood.  He was to go and measure the Temple of God, its altar and those that worshipped within.  This would be the Holy of Holies and the holy place.  The temple will be constructed so the Jews can practice the Mosaic law in the first half of the seven years of tribulation.  It would seem that God was going to evaluate the temple and the worshippers within its walls.  He was then instructed to leave out of outer court.   So we glean from this that for the first half of the seven years of the Tribulation the Jews will possess not only the temple mount but all of Jerusalem.  The one thing we do know about the Anti-christ is that he will be able to broker a peace between Israel and its neighbors.  Something that  has eluded them since the birth of Israel in 1948.  He will probably win a Nobel Peace Prize for it.

     Now in the middle of the Tribulation period the anti-christ will proclaim himself God and place an image of himself and demand that all people including the Jews to worship him.  It will be at this time that the Jews will know that they have been deceived.  This false messiah will be able to rule Jerusalem for 42 months.  The city of Jerusalem will once again be ruled by the Gentiles though it has been in the hands of the Jews since 1967.  

     John uses the phrase tread under because it will be like all hell has broken loose.  The opponents of Israel such as the Arab League and the world system will rejoice.  Jerusalem and Israel has been a pain in the side of the world since its inception in 1948.  The Arab Israeli conflict has seen no resolution and has been a sore spot in world affairs for decades.  The world under satan’s control will desecrate and hunt down the Jews again.  They like the tribulation saints will cry out for the end of this reign of terror and wish for the coming of the Messiah
