Isaiah 9:6
6 For to us a child is
born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Today from this verse we are going to
learn seven things about Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, the redeemer of
mankind and the victor over death, hell and the grave. The beautiful thing is that Isaiah who many
call the prophet to royalty shares this wonderful prophecy, prediction and
promise some 700 years before Christ. In
fact in Isaiah we have more than a hundred prophecies about who Jesus Christ
is, His ministry and role. Today we get
a glimpse of who Jesus is. Before we
start here is a funny Christmas story a little boy was singing the Christmas
carol God and sinners reconcile when he mistook the words and said, God and
sinners he dressed in style.
1. For unto us a child is
born. This statement has both a
universal and personal application.
Jesus came to save both the world and us. His life, death burial and resurrection were
for us. We could not save
ourselves. Our sin was both manmade and
eternal. It had to be an eternal
man. While we were yet sinners Christ
died for us. His allowed His body to be
broken for our healing and his blood to be shed that our sins could be cleansed
and taken away once and for all. Mankind
needed a savior and we did as well. We
could not save ourselves, no creed, mantra, saying, religious system spiritual
leader, behavior rules or manmade religion could save us only God’s answer.
2. Unto us a Son is given. This
means that this individual would be the second person of the Godhead. God would assume flesh and dwell among us in
grace and truth. Jesus is God with a
face, 100% God and 100% man. The perfect
combination of man and God. The union of
the divine and natural. He came to earth
and took on human flesh. He was like us in every way except sin. "But these are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you
may have life in his name." John 20:31.
Jesus came for a reason again this statement is universal and
personal. Jesus came for the world but
also for us. He came, died, buried and
rose again so we could live and have eternal and abundant life.
3. The government will be upon His shoulder. This alludes to Jesus current government in
the hearts of His followers. We have
undying loyalty. We are fully committed
to Him. He reigns in the hearts, minds,
attitudes, words, thoughts, motives and actions of His people. We are obedient to His mission and
command. Our kingdom is one of
righteousness peace and joy. We are the
mighty restraining and enlightening force.
We hold back the forces of hell.
It is also a prophecy of Jesus one day exacting judgment, ruling,
reigning in the millennium and in the new heaven and earth.
4. He is the wonderful counselor.
In the KJV, He is wonderful.
There is no one like Jesus. He is
inspiring delight, pleasurable, beyond admiration; extremely good; marvelous. He is magnificent
superb,
glorious, lovely, delightful, first-class, first-rate, super, great and
amazing. There is no one like
Jesus. In the Hebrew this means He is a
miracle. The NIV, puts the two
together. Jesus is our wonderful
counselor. It means He is our
advisor. The Word is our counselor and
Jesus is the Logos or the Word in human form.
He is also the Rhema or revealed word.
As Jesus is the truth and revealer of truth so today the Holy Spirit is
our counselor and reveals, Jesus and points us to Jesus. Today we have an advisor, one who assists and
supports us. The Holy Spirit takes that
which He heard from the Bible and reveals it to us. You need direction, guidance and assistance
you have it and you are never alone.
5. Jesus is the Mighty God. He
is the second person of the Godhead. He
is part creator and sustainer of everything.
He is the center of the atom.
Jesus is eternal, all powerful, all knowing, perfect and glorious. That is what He was, is and ever will
be. Isaiah saw Him as He was and is now. On earth Jesus temporary laid aside His
eternal attributes but on the cross He was God in human form dying on the cross
for our sins. He took all the sins for
all time for all mankind. The eternal
man dying for our sins. After the
resurrection He pick assumed them again.
6. This term has caused confusion with many Bible scholars. It means that Jesus is the avenue, connection
and means to the Father. Under his care,
his protection, and his provision, we are safe and will be satisfied for all
eternity. Isaiah is highlighting the
divine nature of the messiah. Jesus is
the essence and divine nature of the Father.
It means we are connected to God and He too us. We and His and He is ours. Nothing can separate from the love of God in
Christ Jesus our Lord.
7. He is the Prince of Peace. He
is the one who bring absence of inner conflict or warfare. He gives internal law and order. He brings calmness and tranquility. He brings peace of mind, spirit and quietness
to the soul. He gives peace that the
world cannot give or take away. He gives
peace and then in turn we become bearers of His peace. He is the ruler and giver of peace. He settles the matter of eternal life. He ends the war between us and God. The condemnation, guilt, strife and
frustration of war is over. He defeated
satan, death, hell, and the grave. The
angel appeared to the shepherds and said to them, “Do not be afraid! For
behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:
11Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the
Lord. Then after there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the
heavenly host, praising God and saying: 14“Glory to God in the highest, and on
earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!” This is Christmas and what Christmas is all
about. Jesus Christ is the reason for
the season
